Summary: This award will be given to individuals with a strong record of quality, quantity, and breadth of teaching and/or evaluation of learners. The learners may be students, residents, faculty, and/or other medical professionals (e.g., nursing, EMS, etc.). Evidence should focus on activities within the past 5 years, but one’s entire career will also be considered. (See examples of portfolios at the bottom of this page.)
Teaching and Evaluation: Activities may include: preparing and giving lectures; teaching in the ambulatory setting; teaching rounds; facilitating small groups; working one-on-one with learners; making education-related presentations; assisting in learner evaluations.
Evidence of Quality: (e.g., success of teaching) activities may include: summarized ratings from learners; peer observation/review; course director ratings; letters of support; outcome indicators of learner performance; enrollment figures.
Evidence of Quantity: (e.g., amount of teaching) activities may include: number of hours teaching (duration and frequency of lectures); number of years teaching; number of learners and/or groups taught.
Dimensions of Breadth: (e.g., diversity of teaching) activities may include: different levels or types of learners; different courses; different styles/formats of teaching or evaluation; old versus new curriculum; internal versus external teaching.
Instructions for Submitting Portfolios: The following examples set the standards for the category of Teaching and Evaluation. You should accumulate and document as much evidence as possible of your global teaching accomplishments with an emphasis on the past 5 years.
The structured summaries in each of these examples have been prepared using a template which you will need to use in your portfolio. You may download a copy of the template into a Word document.
( See a copy of this template.)
It is expected that your mini-portfolio will vary in content from the examples above. The overarching concept is that the evidence you present demonstrates strong evidence of a commitment to teaching and evaluation in terms of quantity, quality, and breadth.
